BOOK REVIEW: The One For Me

Title: The One For Me
Author: Layla James

Description:

Seventeen-year- old Katy couldn’t find good luck if it were in an open pail. Her parents announce their divorce and her boyfriend, Hayden, of a year breaks up with her for long legged hottie, Holly, all in one week. Katy’s luck might as well be buried with her dignity, when she is partnered up with Avalon High School’s own bad by Liam Erickson.

Katy follows Liam after he ditches her to go to a party, where she finds Hayden and Holly swapping spit in her face. Furious, Katy kisses Liam to get back at Hayden, leaving her with a re-bound girl and new class hoe, reputation.

Determined to save the last bit of her reputation, she proposes Liam a deal, a good reputation with his teachers, if he will ‘pretend’ to be her boyfriend, to stop the rumors. Katy deals with her parents’ divorce, her reputation being ruined and finds herself having more in common with Liam than she ever imagined. By the end, Katy can’t tell who is ‘pretending’ and who isn’t.

Review:

WARNING: There might be spoilers!
It was a good read, though not very original in my opinion. And I was annoyed by the writing. Too many errors. Grammar or typos. Very elementary school-like. And who the hell was Logan anyway??? I think it was mentioned either in stead of Liam or Hayden. A few times. Too many for my likes. And I think once or two the writer mistook Liam for Hayden or whatever. Very annoying, as I said. I mean, I know now it's self-published, but still. It's English, for Pete's sake! Can't you at least write the verbs and times right? And, about the typos, before you publish a book, please re-read it multiple times and check there aren't errors such as "Her" instead of "Here" and so may others. It was frustrating, trying to understand what was written and then realize it was a different word than the one there. Or the use of the verb "Done" instead of "Did". I mean, I can let it pass when it comes to the way teens talk, but teachers? Teachers mistaking verbs is just too much. I'm not and English language expert or anything (I'm even Italian, mind you) but even I know how to write in Elglish. And know the use of verbs.

That thing aside, there was another thing that annoyed me a bit. There were some resemblance to Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, referring to when Patch and Nora have to work together for a school project (sex and attraction too, come to think of it), then he ditches her to go somewhere else and she goes to find him and.. so on. And there's a phrase Liam said to Katy that reminded me too much of something Patch said to Nora. Made me uncomfortable. It was annoying.

The good part was Liam and Katy relationship. Very hot, fun and kind of sweet. I liked Liam, after he stopped being a jerk. And it kind of made me sick how Katy behaved around Hayden, especially that one time when Liam got mad for good. I mean, she had just spent an amazing time with Liam, was it really necessary to succumb and cry like a little girl in Hayden's arms? I mean, it was no big deal and how Liam reacted was too much, but still. Weak girl. Get a grip.
Hayden was hateful and kind of pityful too, if you ask me. An idiot.
Jennifer was nice, though nothing special.
Katy's parents were cool. Especially her mom. I liked her, she was an awesome mother. And the frozen boxers thing was very funny.
All in all, a good read. It even made me cry. Twice! And yeah, I'll admit it here, and I know it might sound crazy, but I like books that can make me cry, as well as make me laugh. I love it when I get strong emotions by reading a book, be it something fun or something sad or incredibly romantic.
Anyway, obviously recommended!
